Were I to write a post about great Canadian television shows, it would be mercifully brief. As it is, you won’t need to set aside much time to drink in this dispatch. But the list of “impactful” series from our neighbors to the north (I hate myself for using this phrase) isn’t extensive. I’m seeing SCTV, You Can’t Do That on Television, The Littlest Hobo, Degrassi and, of course, the sublime The Kids in The Hall. Sure, someone might want to get technical and try to slide in an X-Files to burnish the resume but, come on, the truth is oot there: they (and many other American shows and movies) just moved production to Vancouver to save money. ‘Murrican! I even recall reading a fall TV preview a few years ago where an unnamed network exec offered this scathing indictment of a pilot episode: “Looks Canadian.” Well, then. But! Screwing around on YouTube recently, I came across this gem: Lance et Compte, a late-80s French-Canadian soap about a pro hockey team. Translated into English, it’s He Shoots, He Scores. Translated into 2017, the opening credits are fucking brilliant. They’ve got it all: intense hockey action, threatening glares, bad moustaches, violence, nudity, and implied threesomes — all set to theme music that sounds like the demo song on a Casio keyboard! Be sure to watch all of the opening sequences. DISCLAIMER: I can bear no responsibility if you become addicted to this show in any way. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go review my life choices.
