Things You Absolutely Must Remember Leading Up To The Super Bowl

Don’t worry! I know there’s endless analysis out there, so I’m keeping this under 500 words.

.) It’s the Super Bowl, not the Superbowl.

.) Much- and I mean MUCH- will be made about Eli Manning’s leap to elite status. To be fair, he has been sublime at times this season. However, the emergence of Victor Cruz alongside Hakeem Nicks has had a lot to do with that. They are physical and have great hands, and could create matchup problems galore for the Pats.

.) There will be some whining by media members about the game being held in Indianapolis (and really, who wants to be in Indianapolis in February?). But if an expense accounter griping about the nippy weather as he waits to enter Diddy’s party annoys you, just think about how bad the complaining would be during a good economy.

.) FYI, The Voice will be on directly after the game. Just in case you missed the 379,000,000 promos that NBC has already run.

.) NBC, a word. I’m aware that Peyton Manning is Eli’s brother, and that they’re playing the game on the same field where Peyton had so many great moments. I’m also painfully aware that their  helicopter of a father, Archie, was once a star in the NFL. That said, you get two cutaway shots per half of them (I’m assuming they’ll be sitting together). I think that’s more than generous. As usual, you may be liberal with the Giselle Bundchen shots.

.) Consistent analysis may be hard to come by. For example: the Giants are a different team since that no-show loss the Washington on December 18th. But heaven forbid anyone suggest that the Patriots horrible, no-good defense may have improved as the season went on.

.) Much will be made of the fact that, while the Pats haven’t lost since early November, their winning streak (at least until the playoffs) consisted of no matchups with playoff teams. However, virtually every other quality NFL team would have lost at least one of those games; it’s a testament to the singular focus that Bill Belichick is able to impart on this team.

.) “Keys to the game” will be analyzed, debated and passed through your lower intestine (cases in point: the Giants fearsome pass rush; the virtually impossible-to-cover Rob Gronkowski), yet it seems that more often than not lesser factors end up deciding the game. For example, who was talking about the Pats’ rushing attack prior to the AFC Championship game?

.) Yes, this SB is a rematch…from 4 years ago, which is a couple of lifetimes in NFL terms. There are 15 Giants on the team from SB 42, 8 on the Pats.

.) Tom Coughlin is the only coach in NFL history to twice guide his team to 3 playoff victories and reach the Super Bowl.
